A learn to sail vacation is exactly what it sounds like — a sailing holiday where the experience itself is the instruction. You are not in a classroom. You are not watching videos. You are on a boat, in beautiful water, learning to sail by actually sailing.
MOS runs liveaboard learn to sail programs in two of the most spectacular sailing destinations in the world: the Sea of Cortez in La Paz, Mexico and the Pacific Northwest in Vancouver, BC.
What a Week Looks Like
Seven days liveaboard. One group, one captain, one boat.
You wake up at anchor in a bay you chose the night before. You make coffee in the cockpit while the thermals build. By nine o’clock you’re sailing — trimming sails, reading the wind, learning to feel what the boat is telling you. By afternoon you’re at the helm, making decisions, becoming the skipper.
Evenings are at anchor in places most people never reach. In the Sea of Cortez that means Ensenada Grande, Caleta Partida, Isla San Francisco — anchorages that cruisers plan entire seasons around. In the Pacific Northwest it means Desolation Sound, the Gulf Islands, the inside passages that feel like they belong to you alone.
This is not a resort. It is better than a resort. You are living on a boat, in extraordinary water, with a captain who will show you everything he knows.
What You Learn
The NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master curriculum covers everything you need to bareboat charter independently: sail trim, anchoring, docking, weather reading, passage planning, navigation, and seamanship.
By day three most students have stopped thinking about what to do and started sailing. By the end of the week they are talking about where they want to go next — which charter destination, which route, which boat.
That shift — from passenger to skipper — is what the week is designed to produce.
What You Come Back With
The NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master certification is accepted by Dream Yachts, Sunsail, and Moorings at 40+ destinations worldwide. It is the only certification Captain Mike has never seen denied at a charter base.
You also come back with a sailing resume — documented sea miles, passages completed, conditions sailed in — that supports your certification when you arrive at the charter base.
And you come back with the confidence that only comes from doing the thing for real. Seven days in real conditions with real decisions. That is not something a weekend course can give you.
The Two Destinations
Sea of Cortez, La Paz Mexico — October through May. Jacques Cousteau called it the aquarium of the world. Consistent thermals, warm water, protected anchorages, extraordinary wildlife. Manta rays, sea lions, dolphins, whale sharks. The sailing is forgiving enough to learn on and spectacular enough to remember forever.
Pacific Northwest, Vancouver BC — May through October. Desolation Sound, the Gulf Islands, the Inside Passage. Some of the most technically demanding and visually stunning sailing in the world. Tidal current, spectacular scenery, wildlife that includes orcas, humpbacks, and bald eagles. This is where seamanship is earned.
One Group Per Month
MOS takes one booking per month. That is a deliberate choice. One group means Captain Mike’s full attention for seven days. No rotating instructors. No class of twelve waiting for their turn at the helm. You get real instruction, not supervision.
