The marina is watching.
That’s the first thing most sailors notice when they bring a catamaran into a tight berth with a crosswind pushing them sideways. Every boat in the marina has a view. Every skipper on those boats has an opinion. And the wind does not care about any of it.
Docking a catamaran in crosswinds is the maneuver that separates sailors who have practiced from sailors who have read about it. Here is the method Captain Mike teaches — the one that works in Croatia, in the BVI, in the Sea of Cortez, in any marina where the wind has decided to be unhelpful.
Why Catamarans Are Different
A monohull docks the way most sailors learn to dock. You approach under control, use prop wash and rudder to steer, and the hull shape helps you track through the water.
A catamaran has two engines, two hulls, and significantly more windage. The beam — the width of the boat — can be fifteen feet or more on a 45-footer. In a crosswind, that beam acts like a sail. The wind pushes the whole vessel sideways whether you want it to or not.
The wheel is largely irrelevant when you are moving slowly in a crosswind. At low speed, rudder authority drops close to zero. Turning the wheel does almost nothing. What controls the boat are the two engines — and most sailors arriving at their first catamaran charter have never used them this way.
The Twin-Engine Pivot Method
The centerpoint of a catamaran — the point around which it will rotate if both engines are used correctly — sits roughly in the middle of the vessel, between the two hulls.
To pivot on that centerpoint: put one engine in forward and one engine in reverse simultaneously. The boat rotates without moving forward or backward. Adjust the throttle balance and you control the rate and direction of rotation.
This is the fundamental maneuver. Everything else in catamaran docking is a variation of it.
- Bow to port: starboard engine forward, port engine reverse.
- Bow to starboard: port engine forward, starboard engine reverse.
- Slide sideways to port: both engines forward, helm hard to port, differential throttle to control rotation. More advanced — requires practice to feel.
The approach to the berth is where most sailors make their mistake. They come in too fast, lose control of the beam in the crosswind, and spend the next ten minutes using fenders as a substitute for seamanship.
The correct approach is slow. Slower than feels natural. At low speed you have time to make corrections. At higher speed, corrections become emergencies.
Captain Mike’s Rule: if you feel rushed, you are going too fast. Stop. Back out. Set up the approach again. The marina will wait. The wind will not get worse for taking another thirty seconds.
Reading the Wind Before You Commit
Before you enter the marina, assess the wind direction relative to your berth. Is the wind pushing you onto the dock or off it? Is it pushing you into the neighboring boat or away from it?
Wind onto the dock: the wind is your friend on approach and your enemy once you are stopped. You will drift in naturally. The problem is stopping without hitting the dock hard. Use reverse on both engines early and hold position with short bursts of forward as needed.
Wind off the dock: the wind is your enemy on approach. You need to be closer to the berth than feels comfortable before the wind pushes you away. Commit to the berth. Don’t hesitate halfway.
Crosswind from the beam: the most demanding scenario. The wind is pushing the whole boat sideways as you approach. Use differential throttle to counteract the drift while maintaining your approach angle. This requires practice. It cannot be fully described — it has to be felt.
What Practice Actually Looks Like
Captain Mike teaches catamaran docking in open water before approaching any marina. You practice the pivot. You practice moving the boat sideways. You practice stopping from different speeds. You do this until it feels like the boat is responding to thought rather than instruction.
Then you approach a dock. Slowly. With fenders deployed and crew briefed.
The first time is uncomfortable. The second time is better. By the third time, most sailors have found the feel of it — the way the boat responds to small throttle changes, the way the wind loads up on the beam, the way stopping requires committing to reverse earlier than instinct says to.
